Jake

My horse Jake, and I have always gotten along. I have liked him immensely from day one, but never realized how much I meant to him. One day I got to find out.

Ordinarily Jake would have been in his stall when I arrived to ride. It was uncomplicated to get him out and saddle him up. This day, however, I arrived early and he was in the pasture with some other horses.

I was a novice at the time and had seen other riders enter the pasture to get their horses so I thought, "Why not, I will just get him myself."

Taking his halter, I entered the gate and started across the grass toward him. I had walked about 200 feet when I realized another horse was looking very angrily at me. I was worried and started back toward the gate. This seemed to prompt the angry critter to charge me. I turned in horror as I was being threatened, actually in serious danger.

Just as I thought, "Oh my God! I am going to be trampled", Jake intervened, placing himself between me and this threat. He stood his ground, flattened his ears and turned his hind end to threaten a kick if the horse proceeded. It stopped. Jake walked me to the gate keeping a wary eye on his ill mannered pasture mate.

I hugged him snugly and gave extra treats that day. He will be forever special.
